Luigi Is Faking His Fear of Ghosts

luigi__s_mansion_by_miss_strychnineThis month, every Trophy Bomb post is inspired by a drawing from DeviantART.com. Today's piece is inspired by users miss-strychnine and nintendrawer.

The first time you see a ghost, it’s got to be the scariest thing in the world. Ghosts are weird looking, scream at you and usually have unresolved business on earth they need you to help them with. (There’s nothing scarier than open-ended narratives!) I can’t imagine the second time you see a ghost is much better. However, Luigi interacts with ghosts on a regular basis, and he still acts like a scared pussy about it. I think Luigi has actually worked past his fear of ghosts at this point, but it’s become such a part of his identity that he keeps up the charade.

In families, the kids often have to carve personality niches for themselves, in order to get attention. For example, the older sister might get stellar grades, so the younger brother acts out and sets fire to a Toys ‘R’ Us (story o’ my life). In the Mario household, Mario Mario was brave, adventurous and determined. So to get attention, Luigi Mario decided to act like a scared little cry baby all the time. “Whaaa!! I’m Luigi!!! I hate killer ghosts!!!” I believe those very words are spoken in Luigi’s Mansion.

Well, it’s been 20 years since Super Mario 3, when Luigi first started dealing with Boos. I find it hard to believe that after 20 years, he hasn’t gotten used to ghosts. I mean, these ghosts aren’t even that hard to deal with. They freeze completely when you stare at them. Problem solved. Just look at the ghosts and they can’t harm you. That’s why I think he’s been faking it all these years. Luigi just wants attention, and the way he does it is by freaking out when he sees a ghost, even when he has a very effective vacuum cleaner weapon to handle the problem.

It could be that Luigi has a deep seeded fear of ghosts, stemming back to his childhood, and he’s never gotten the appropriate counseling to work through his issues. Well, after I burned down the Toys ‘R’ Us, I was afraid of toys for many years. In fact, up until last week, whenever I touched a Transformer my hand felt like it was burning. Let’s face it – toys are creepy. They look at you while you sleep and come to life at night. I can understand how someone would be afraid of toys, but ghosts? Come on. It’s absurd.

So, Luigi, it’s time to move on and find a new personality. We see through the old one, and I think everyone wants to a new Luigi. Might I suggest becoming that which you “fear” most. Get bitten and go vampire on us. Ride the Twilight wave! I know I am.
