I got one as a gift and I wish I could trade it in as a credit for an iPad. This thing is shockingly low tech and doesn't even have any kind of backlighting!? So I either have to wear a headlamp or buy one of these lame-o add on cheese ball lights (my vision is compromised so ambient light won't cut it). I can't believe people pay anything for these-never mind almost $200! Amazon should be given these away as an incentive to buy books from their site. Big deal, I can download a digital book to a handheld device. There is a pilot web browser that works horribly, but might be descent if this POS was in color (Color! What's that!?), but even still it get hung up every time I click on a link and ends up crashing the kindle OS. The hard buttons for turning the pages are terrible- you constantly find yourself inadvertently changing pages mid sentence. How about ditching the hard buttons and key board and going touch screen w/ a soft keyboard? This thing is about as low tech as it gets. It's really motivating mento go buy an iPad, but I'm trying hard to hold out for the gen 2 pad as it will likely be even better and slightly cheaper. I already have kindle's software on all my devices and would still be able to read my kindle purchases on my iPad, etc. I can't believe anything is released in color anymore! I thought that died with the first version of the Palm pilot? If this thing was color w/ a slick touch-screen driven OS, it might justify the price. Otherwise, very soon most kindle owners are going to be suffering from a severe case of "tablet envy" and Amazon won't be able to pay people to carry these paperweights around. At least in the meantime I have my iPod touch and have some sense of coolness.

the kindle uses something called e ink so that the text you read actually looks like text on a real book. in addition, it is very easy to read and has no glare, unlike a normal backlit lcd screen.

With smaller bezels, the 6-inch screen now dominates, plus there’s still plenty of room to hold it easily. The Kindle 3G is definitely worth it. I don't see support for library books. Everyone wants that feature. Amazon should stop being shady not allowing EPub.

The Kindle electronic reader is an amazing device. I got one for my birthday, and I absolutely love it! I didn't realize how many types of media are available. On top of reading books on it, I get my favorite magazines delivered to it now!
