E3 Brings Us Way More Mario!

Just when I was getting bummed about not having new Wii games to be excited about (I still need to play Punch-Out), Nintendo delivered at E3 this year:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Woo hoo! This is my favorite news to come out of E3 so far. Mario games have a great track record for awesomeness, Mario Sunshine notwithstanding, so I’m looking forward to get hooked on the brothers once again.

I’m also excited about Beatles Rock Band, though I wonder if a rhythm games backlash is coming. There’s always Rock Band at every party. How many times will I sing I Am The Walrus before I’m bored with it? It’s cool that Techmo is releasing Fret Nice, the game guitar-based side-scroller. I played a demo at GDC in ’07 and it’s a blast – as well as something else you can play with that expensive guitar controller.

As you can tell by my extensive linking, great E3 coverage can be found at Siliconera.com, friend of this blog. Keep refreshing their site for the latest and greatest.

  • Nintendo final gets it right in an act not seen since the SNES’ days – let there be more then one game of a name brand series for each console. Now if only they would make a Smash Brothers for the DS… Also, Mario Sunshine gets more flak then it deserves. Yeah, you have a water-pack, but its still 3D Mario platforming goodness.

  • Amen! The more Smash Bros out there, the happier I am in general.

Eh, I’ve played Sunshine – it’s a mess of a concept and I’m not into the gameplay. However, it’s certainly not the worst Mario game out there.

  • Nintendo doesn’t even need to try. So their new big game is another Mario game that reminds you of the Mario game you loved when you were a kid? They’re the bar band of the gaming industry.

  • What’s brilliant is that Nintendo takes familiar game-play and aesthetics, but creates new/challenging levels & adds new game-play features.

The nostalgia is the frosting on the game’s cake, which is more challenging and thoughtful game design.

  • Last year, at a thrift store, I actually managed to find a CD-i (Actually, I have found yet another at a garage sale recently, and some games at a consignment store – you can find anything, I guess.) First thing I did after buying it was to go online and buy Hotel Mario and the 2 of the Zelda games. Here is the thing – Hotel Mario is not a bad game by any means. It has some of the tightest controls for a CD-i game (Which is usually sub-par) and is addictive and challenging. While basically Door-door, it re-dose the game a lot better. Most people just assume the game is bad because of the Silly cut-scenes (and the fact it is on the CD-i.) I guess it really comes down to the fact that not a lot of people have actually played it. I’d give Hotel Mario a chance (that is, in the off chance you get to try it out.)

  • Well, I’ve only seen the unthinkable cut scenes, but you’ve actually played them, so you would know better. However, this guy might disagree with you, lol.
